Though I purchased what I will call Elmhurst in the summer of 2014, my association with it goes a bit farther back.
In 1955 a rather nervous four year old embarked on a (really long) educational journey at Elmhurst Nursery School. It was in a great big house on Elmhurst Road, and one of the teachers was a very nice lady named Miss Dukes. She was a good teacher, 'Peter and The Wolf' was played a lot, and I decided that I could do at least some of the things school involved. And I got to be one of the three wise men in the Christmas play.
A couple of years later Miss Dukes became Mrs. Pine, and a mere half century or so later, it was time for Elmurst Nursery School to close. I often noticed the school at its new home at 4023 Roland Avenue when I rode my bike by, and when the house came up for sale, I had to have a look. It had everything, "good bones", big radiators, wooden floors, a spacious third floor, and, occasional surprises. The doors to the basement under the porch are like the entrance to a saloon.
There is a cherub at the peak of the roof.
My favorite kind of house project is one that has escaped renovation, and this house was much like it was around the turn of the century-before the more recent one.
So I got to reintroduce myself to Mrs. Pine when I bought the house from her, and I hope she won't mind my putting on some new shingles and upgrading to central AC.
The name of my company is Magis Farms, like The Magi, see?
My hope is to get the house up to contemporary standards and code and stop there, leaving the rest for a nice young family who wants to live there. It seems like a fun house to grow up in to me.
